Best keeper you ever saw play live - and why?
C'mon, be honest - unpopular views more than welcome.

Mine is not that unpopular, but I would say that Big Neville Southall was above any other keeper I watched across a number of years. Including Peter Schmeichel, who was quite brilliant.

Why? Every time I saw him play, Nev would produce at least one save in the game that I genuinely thought was "world class". Did it every single time. Schmeichel runs him a close second. Both were better than Shilton, who was still very, very good.

Was too young to see Banks play live. Had the good fortune to watch Buffon a few times in Italy, but I feel that's me cheating a bit. That guy was top class.

But Nev every time.

Thoughts, ladies and gents...

Saw Banks live different class. Thanks Greenwood for getting Bobby Ferguson instead of him. Mind you even with 4 England world cup players in the team we would have still found a way to fuck it up.
Phil Parkes for us

Manuel Neuer

Was in Dublin when ROI beat them in a qualifier few years back, Randolph with the assist for the winner.

But i've never seen a keeper comand his area like Neuer did. Every set piece they had a very high line and he'd just claim the cross. Distribution was class. Easily the best i've seen live. Seen De Gea make some absolute worldies too, he is up there with the best. I also think Ederson is class, never seen a goalkeeper ping a ball the way he does. Id say his a better passer of the ball then some of our outfield players

Gigi Buffon was always my most favorite GK. Saw him in the World Cup, and he was a presence even then.

I have a soft spot for Ludo, he was in goal when I started watching us and many a time I saw him make superb saves to keep the score down.

Phil Parkes for us.

Pat Jennings against us.

Objectively it has to come down to Schmeichel because of his presence and Shilton because of his shot stopping ability... brilliant goalkeeper in that Notts Forest team under Clough. Parkes edges Ludo out as best West Ham keeper , he was a great keeper and unfortunate to be around at the same time as Shilton and Clemence on the England scene.

Re: Best keeper you ever saw play live - and why?
For West Ham I'd say Ludo.

Southall is a v good call.

Schmeichel probably was the most effective keeper in Prem League time but I remember him mainly for being v commanding and great at one on one's. Southall I remember as being a great shot stopper.

Probably Schmeichel. He was just a beast in goal and made it look small. Commanded his area brilliantly too and outstanding in one-on-ones.

the best keeping performance i have witnessed live has to be Phil Parkes at West Brom in the cup 1980 ,that performance was the main reason we won it .

Gordon Banks ~ He was very special
In fact, I would even go so far as to say that he was to goalkeepers what our Bobby was to outfield players
If only Ron Greenwood had signed him for us when he had the chance

agree with Southall, and somewhat randomly, Shay GIVEN.

He was ALWAYS fucking brilliant when we played the geordies.

a goalie who seemed to pull off astonishing saves regularly was Shay GIVEN , brilliant reflexes, although he did seem a bit smaller than other top goalies
.

Grobbelaar. Saw him play a couple of times, had this star quality about him. I won't forget him taking the piss in the 84 European Cup final shoot out. Remember what the Romans had done to Dundee Utd in the month before.

But how the fuck did he not do time for defrauding the game in the nineties.

David Beasant massive bastard. Saw him keeping shots out for Chelsea against us in some halfpenny gong competition around Xmas 1989.

Hislop is a brave call for us. Liked the fella, but would have parkes, ludo, green and fabianski above him.

Albeit Gerrard shouldn't have even had the ball in the cup final in that moment, not many top keepers would have let that in for me.

Schmeichel and Seaman were consistently outstanding and in my 35 years of going to football, dont think I've seen helter than either.

southbank...regarding Southall, think the best goalkeeping performance in a game I've seen for me was him in goal for Wales years back...IIRC it was at Wrexham's Racehorse Ground and Wales held Germany to a 0-0 or 1-1 draw? Southall made a ridiculous number of absolutely world class saves in it.

Peter Schmeichel
Petr Cech

For West Ham
Shaka Hislop in both stints...

Parkes, ludo, schmeichel, shilton. Seen loads of good ones and some greta displays.

However best performance I've seen live was ludo v man u

2nd being ter Stegen, for barcelona v Sevilla 18 months ago. Pulled off some world class saves,.

Me aged 10 to 14. You've never seen a braver more reactive shot stopper. Physique and handling stopped me being a contender.

For us, definitely Phil Parkes.

For other teams, Shilton, I guess.
That said, we did knock three past him at home when he played for Stoke.
